UNU/IIST's main concern is the development of software technology in developing countries, and it concentrates on capacity building through postgraduate training.
Training takes three forms: fellowships at UNU/IIST (17 fellows from 10 developing countries during 2002), fellowships for computing lecturers and for PhD students at universities in developed countries (13 fellows from 5 countries to 6 partner universities), and schools/courses in developing countries. Schools last 2-4 weeks, have regional participation, and involve a number of courses, some taught by UNU/IIST staff, some by experts from developed countries, and some by people from the host country. In 2002 UNU/IIST organised 5 training schools in India, Kazakhstan, the Lebanon, Nigeria and Vietnam. There were some 250 participants from 20 countries. Training courses are taught by UNU/IIST staff, and in 2002 we organised 4 courses in Argentina (2), Hungary, and China.
UNU/IIST needs to maintain its academic excellence through research. UNU/IIST has allocated more research time for its academic staff. During 2002 UNU/IIST launched three new research topics (related to the currently important areas of e-business, chip design and component-based programming).
Specification Case Studies in RAISE edited by UNU/IIST staff was published in February 2002. This book collected and represented part of the research achievement of UNU/IIST staff and fellows in formal techniques for software development since the commencement of UNU/IIST in 1992. The book has its own web-site from which complete specifications of all the case studies are available.
In 2002 a total of 14 papers was published in conference proceedings, 2 papers were accepted by journals, and a conference proceedings was been edited. UNU/IIST has also produced 23 internal technical reports.
UNU/IIST has continued to develop its good relations with China, in particular with Macao. On 1 February the Chief Executive of the Macao SAR Government awarded Professor Zhou Chaochen an Honourable Certificate for his outstanding contribution to Macao society. In August, the Macao SAR Government invited Professor Zhou Chaochen to serve on the Macao Science and Technology Committee as an ex-officio member. The UNU/IIST local project, Information Center of Macao, continued, and in January the Macao Foundation agreed to contribute USD 44250 as the annual expense of the project.
2002 is UNU/IIST's 10th anniversary. Several events were organised to celebrate this and in the process increase UNU/IIST's visibility. The events were in Portugal, China, and Macao: UNU/IIST's 3 donors.
During 2002, the Director, Prof. Zhou Chaochen, retired, and Dr. Tomasz Janowski resigned. The new Director, from 1 November 2002, is Prof. Armando Haeberer. Two new reseach staff, Dr. Bernhard K. Aichernig and Dr. Liu Zhiming also joined UNU/IIST.
Tragically, UNU/IIST's new Director, Armando Haeberer, was to suffer a heart attack and pass away on 11 February 2003.
The total expenditure as at 31 December is about 97% of the allotment for 2002, and 45% of the total budget in the biennium of 2002-2003.
UNU/IIST was audited by the UN Board of Auditors during 18 February to 1 March 2002. Their recommendations have mostly been implemented.
