UN and host country linkages
UNU/IIST has continued to develop its good relations with China, in
particular with Macao. On 1 February the Chief Executive of the Macao
SAR Government awarded Professor Zhou Chaochen an Honourable
Certificate for his outstanding contribution to Macao society. In
August, the Macao SAR Government invited Professor Zhou Chaochen to
serve on the Macao Science and Technology Committee as an ex-officio
member.
In early May with support from Mr. Qian Qishen, Vice Premier
of China, the long pending issue for Chinese personnel of UNU/IIST to
travel between Macao and the Mainland of China was at last resolved.
The UNU/IIST local project, Information Center of Macao, continued,
and in January the Macao Foundation agreed to contribute USD
44250 as the annual expense of the project. See
section *.
The CUE Initiative will be a basis for future collaborative research
in computing between scientists from China, the USA and Europe.
UNU/IIST is the host for the inaugural workshop in October (see
section *) and expects to play an important future role in
this initiative.
UNU/IIST jointly organised the International Conference on Formal
Engineering Methods in Shanghai during 21-25 October: He Jifing is
co-chair of the conference, and Chris George is co-chair of the
Programme Committee. UNU/IIST also sponsors the International
Symposium on Future Software Technology which is held in China each
year, this year in Wuhan in October.
UNU/IIST continues to have good relations with the universities in
Macao, particularly the University of Macao. with which we have a joint
project (section *), and whose MSc course some of our
fellows currently attend. Our internet connection is also through the
University of Macao, and they are always willing to supply us with
technical advice. (In 2003 we plan to upgrade our internet
connection, which means it will go directly through the local ISP.)
