Dr. G. M. (Mike) Reed joined UNU-IIST as Director at the beginning of 2005. From 1986 to 2005, he was the General Electric Company Fellow in Computation at St Edmund Hall, Oxford University. He holds a doctorate in pure mathematics from Auburn University (USA) and a doctorate in computation from Oxford University (UK). His previous experience includes terms as a Senior Research Associate at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the US Naval Research Laboratory, and as a Manager of Postdoctoral Programs for the US National Science Foundation. He is a former Research Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and former Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Ohio University, where he was also the Associate Director of the Institute for Medicine and Mathematics. Dr Reed has numerous publications in both pure mathematics (topology) and in computation (digital images, semantics of programming languages, and software engineering).
Scott McNeil joined UNU-IIST to lead the Global Desktop Project in April. He has considerable experience in open source software projects as well as in working for various companies.
Dr. Vladimir Mencl joined UNU-IIST in September from Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. He has a one-year contract as a post-doctoral fellow to work on the project on formal methods for object and component systems. His background is in software engineering, particularly behavioural specifications of software systems.
Dr. Irshad Khan joined UNU-IIST in September from Chittagong University in Bangladesh. He has a ten-month contract as a post-doctoral fellow to work on the economic impact of e-Government, the internet and the marketplace, and social networking for e-Government. His background is in economics, though he has recently also become involved in computer science and software engineering.
Prof. He Jifeng retired from UNU-IIST at the end of November and returned to his native China. He has been a Senior Research Fellow at UNU-IIST since 1998 and has contributed enormously to its ongoing research and to its world-wide reputation. He will be extremely hard to replace.
Dr. Bernhard Aichernig has decided to return to his position in Austria at the end of his current appointment in February of 2006, when will have been a Research Fellow for 4 years. Bernhard is an expert in software testing, particularly the relationship between testing and specification, and he added substantially to the subjects UNU-IIST can teach and research. He also will be hard to replace.
UNU-IIST therefore expects to recruit two new academic staff in early 2006.
UNU-IIST has also created positions of "Associate Researchers", whereby academic staff at other universities agree to spend one month each year at UNU-IIST for a period of three years. During their annual visit, they agree to offer a course to our fellows and to interact on joint research with the academic staff. In 2005, Dr. Jeff Sanders of Oxford University became our first Associate Researcher. Both Professor Jifeng and Dr. Aichernig have agreed to be Associate Researchers, beginning in 2006.
