1 Summary

UNU/IIST has now existed for almost 18 months. 150 participants have followed 4 two-week advanced training workshops in Beijing, Pune, Bangkok and Hanoi and 1 one week workshop in Pyongyang. 10 fellows have or are being trained for periods of from 7-12 months (or more) at UNU/IIST in Macau, 3 R&D projects: PRaCoSy, DeTfoRS and MacSchubert are well underway or about to start. An international 1 week workshop attracted 38 university computer scientists, including 29 from 9 developing countries. UNU/IIST professional staff have given around 2 dozen presentations in 10, respectively 8 countries in Europe and Asia.

The three scientific staff members each have received well recognized awards: Prof. Zhou Chaochen, the UNU/IIST Principal Research Fellow, became a Member of Academia Sinica, Prof. Dines Bjørner, the Director, received the The John von Neumann Medal (Hungary) and Mr. Søren Prehn, UNU/IIST Research Fellow (1992-1994) received the Elektro-prize (Denmark). A dozen publications have appeared in international journals or in conference proceedings under the UNU/IIST `banner'.

More than 50 post-graduates from Macau attended a 14 week advanced (M.Sc.) level programming methodology course.

Institutional build-up continued during 1993 and is basically finished.

UNU/IIST is covered by a United Nations University Statute and by internationally ratified Agreements between the Governments of Portugal and the People's Republic of China, the Governor of Macau, and the United Nations University.
