10 Macau & China

UNU/IIST is making its presence felt in both Macau and China. The following subsections enumerate local and neighbourhood activities!

10.1 Macau

  1. UoM/M.Sc. Software Engineering 1993 Course:

In the fall of 1993 UNU/IIST staff l conducted a M.Sc. level, 14 week, 2 full lecture hours + 1 hour exercise per week full course: Selected Topics in Software Technology for the University of Macau (UoM) in UNU/IIST's premises. 58 participants from the UoM and from public and private institutions in Macau.

This course must be judged an outstanding success!

  2. UoM/M.Sc. Thesis Work:

UNU/IIST has offered the Faculty of Science and Technology (FS&T) of the UoM to host 2-3-4 (or even more) M.Sc. Thesis students for their end-of-study, 1/2 year project.

  3. UoM/M.Sc. Software Engineering 1994 Courses:

UNU/IIST is already now planning to offer UoM/FS&T two more such course, with different contents, for the spring, respectively autumn of 1994!

  4. MaGICS, MaGICS/1, ...:

UNU/IIST is engaged in a joint feasibility study with the Macau Foundation concerning MaGICS -- a Virtual Reality, Multi-Media, Tourism Destination Information & Control System (amongst other instantiations).

UNU/IIST seeks extensive funding for this project from the Government of Macau, and can argue a long list of impressive benefits for Macau Government, Institutions, the University of Macau, and private institutions and companies, if such a project is conducted.

  5. Macau Internet:

UNU/IIST is engaged in a joint feasibility study with the Macau Foundation concerning MacauNet -- an Internet facility that brings Macau at least in line with what is now quite common in Hong Kong, Singapore, etc.

UNU/IIST is already informally discussing MacauNet with top management of CTM.

  6. Public Seminars:

UNU/IIST offers research seminars for Macau scientists and technologists, and UNU/IIST will work jointly with the Macau Computer Association in securing survey and tutorial seminars aimed at industry software professionals and university and college lecturers and students.

  7. UoM/FS&T Student Facilities at UNU/IIST:

UNU/IIST offers staff and M.Sc. students of University of Macau desk space in UNU/IIST's premises. Similar for other such students. First such is: Mr You Xiaohong (registered at Academia Sinica's Software Institute, Beijing).

  8. Macau Computer Association:

The Macau Computer Association (MCA) has been given facilities in UNU/IIST's offices and are conducting various MCA events using UNU/IIST's seminar room.

  9. Macau + International Informatics Olympiad:

We also co-operate with MCA on the Macau Informatics Olympiad, as well as the IOI: International Olympiad of Informatics. UNU/IIST has presented each of 6 winners with the book: David Harel, Algorithmics -- the Spirit of Computing, 2nd Edition, Addison-Welsey, 1992.

  10. Public Access to UNU/IIST Reference Library:

The extensive UNU/IIST library is accessible to relevant Macau students and professionals.

This offer is being increasingly used by all kinds of Macau professionals!

  11. Miscellaneous:

    1. Contacts are going on with the Cabinet for Legislative Affairs of the Government (and, through it, SAFP) concerning full text search legal database facilities.

    2. Contacts are going on with the Macau Administration for Health concerning possibility of a Health Care Enterprise Study.

    3. We expect early next year to establish an Educational Software Technology Laboratory that can be made accessible to teacher trainers of Macau.14

    4. UNU/IIST cooperates with the Portuguese National Laboratory for Civil Engineering and with the local counterpart, LECM, in supporting the August 3-6, 1995 EPMESC'95 Conference in Macau: International Conference of Education, Practice and Promotion of Computational methods in Engineering (using small computers).

Of the activities not solely directly related to Macau, the below ones will have significant local impact:

  1. [12.] The ongoing PRaCoSy project with 5 trainee fellows in Macau, 1993-1995.

  2. [13.] The ongoing DeTfoRS project with 4 trainee fellows in Macau 1993-1994.
