13 The UNU/IIST Services

13.1 The UNU/IIST Computer Centre

13.1.1 The Equipment Situation

UNU/IIST currently features 9 SUN work stations and two IBM comptatible PC's, shared between 5 administrative staff, 5 academic staff and visitors, and 9 fellows (trainees).

UNU/IIST's current financial situation has not allowed it to acquire very much needed extra computing equipment. The world slump in the IT industry has forced all vendors to abandon previous almost free give-away of such equipment to university institutions.

In early 1994 UNU/IIST will acquire an additional 10-12 computers (PC's and workstations).

13.1.2 The Services

The UNU/IIST computers are all connected to a local area net (LAN), and by Internet E-mail16 to the world community of software technologists and computer scientists.

13.2 The UNU/IIST Library

The UNU/IIST library was established during the summer of 1993. It subscribes to around 150 technical and scientific journals and receives reports from more than 190 research centres.

It also contains an initial collection of some 350 technical and scientific books -- all within the subject are of UNU/IIST.
