Footnotes

 (1)
Terms written with capital initial letters designate well-defined UNU/IIST concepts. Examples are: Research, Training Workshop, and Advanced Development.

 (2)
-- So UNU/IIST covers a broad spectrum: From Domain Analysis via Requirements capture to Software Development; but it does so in a "narrow" sense: Focusing on Design Calculi -- i.e. formal methods.

 (3)
-- á la for example the European Union ESPRIT projects.

 (4)
UNU/IIST instead expects collaborating partners to obtain, with the active help of UNU/IIST such and other funding from which UNU/IIST then expects Consultancy and Training Fees in order to (partially) cover UNU/IIST expenses.

 (5)
UNU/IIST is often facing oftentimes severe delays in arrival of Fellows due to protracted visa "problems".

 (6)
In reference to industrial systems, "lean" means: capable of achieving results without using superfluous resources (e.g., equipment, workers, investments, stock), and "agile" means: capable of deciding quickly and intelligently and accordingly adapting operations quickly and easily.

 (7)
An industry is called "supply-based" if a large number of the parts in its products are procured from (a large number of) suppliers.

 (8)
SME: Small and Mid-sized Enterprise

 (9)
We thank him for outstanding service to UNU/IIST and expect to make good use of his services also in future.

 (10)
1994 saw a "major" disappointment: The Austrian Federal Government, after almost 2 years of protracted discussions, "suddenly pulled the rug" under an "old" MacSchubert project. See the 1993 Annual Report from UNU/IIST.

Ralph-Johan Back (Finland), Eric C. R. Hehner (Canada), Michael Jackson (England), Jayadev Misra (USA), and Carroll Morgan (England)

Dr. Li's Fellowship marks the first Fellow who re-visits UNU/IIST. Dr. LI has obtained, from the P.R. of China Government a grant to research, at the Software Institute of Academia Sinica, Beijing, the use of the Mean Value Duration Calculus -- whose basic Research is done at UNU/IIST -- in the specification and correctness and other property proof of electronic (VLSI) circuits, gates and registers. This marks a first time where a UNU/IIST Fellow successfully transfers research done at UNU/IIST to a home institution.

 (26)
See section 2.2.4.

 (27)
Dr. Wang's Fellowship marks the second Fellow who re-visits UNU/IIST.

 (28)
This topic would presently be: Hybrid Systems.

 (32)
PSAs are used in lieu of Staff positions for medium-to-long term "visitors"; So far UNU/IIST has had PSAs with Dr. Wong Wai. Mr. Alex Lai is also on a PSA.

 (33)
SSA's are usually made between UNU/IIST and short term off-shore experts. So far UNU/IIST has had SSA's with Messrs. Oliver Corff, MoTraS; Walther Neuper, "old" MacSchubert; and Jan Goossenaerts, MIICI and others.

 (34)
UNU/IIST is approaching the (New York, HQ) UN System co-ordinator responsible for Intellectual &c. Property Rights to clarify the issues involved and to make sure our policy is commensurate with UN System positions -- if reasonable and where relevant. Unfortunately the UNU does not anymore have a legal expert through which UNU/IIST could channel its inquiry.

 (35)
Usual calculation: costs + overheads.
