8 The UNU/IIST Computing System

Reference is made to appendix C for details on the UNU/IIST computing facilities.

Equipment: The financial situation during 1993 did not allow a reasonable number of work stations to be procured during 1993. Early to mid 1994, although the financial situation had not improved, UNU/IIST did, however, procure additional equipment -- such that we, with the present personnel can be said to have almost adequate services.

Internet: UNU/IIST has been connected to Internet since April, 1994. The connection is achieved through a V.32b 14.4Kbps line to the University of Macau, which has a 19.2Kbps leased line to HARNET (Hong Kong Academic Research NETwork). UNU/IIST is sharing with the University of Macau, the cost of the connection between Macau and Hong Kong. This amounts to approximately MOP$100,000 per year. The present bandwidth is far from satisfactory. The connections from Hong Kong to the rest of the World drops very often due to "time out". We believe this is due to the bottle-neck of the US-Hong-Kong link. It is 128Kbps, and is shared by seven universities and polytechnics in Hong Kong, as well as the University of Macau and UNU/IIST. Our own low-speed connection to the University of Macau and the indirect link to Hong Kong further deteriorate the situation. We are at present analysing other options for Internet connection.
