2 A SUMMARY OVERVIEW

UNU/IIST is doing very well. It is closely adhering to the Programme as approved by Council at its Spring Session in 1994, and to the Tactics as approved by the UNU/IIST Board at its most recent, May 1995, Session.

  1. Finances:

The financial situation has improved. The current UNU endowment fund installation in respect of UNU/IIST stands at US$29.2 million, and is expected to close at US$30 million by early January 1996.

See Finances and Budget section 9.

  2. Fellows:

As of 10 January 1996, UNU/IIST has 11 Fellows. They come from China (3), India (1), Mongolia (1), The Philippines (3), and Vietnam (3) -- each for an approximate stipend period of 9-12 months. Shortly, additional Fellows will arrive from Korea (South), China, Thailand and elsewhere.

    Over 1995, UNU/IIST has had 23 Fellows.

    See Fellows section 4

  3. Courses:

We are active in off-shore as well as Macau-based post-graduate and post-doctoral courses. For 1995 we have had or are planning two such courses in Macau, and one each in Vietnam, Mongolia (a mini-course), Malaysia, and India. A total of 135 course participants have received (or will receive) extensive course hand-outs (books, etc.) and certificates.

    See Post-graduate and Post-doctoral Courses section 5.1.

  4. Research:

Research during 1995 has been done with five Fellows and will be done for the next nine months with four-six new Fellows.

    See Joint Research section 5.2

  5. Advanced Development:

Advanced development is proceeding with nine Fellows working on six projects, and seven University of Macau students working on three (M.Sc. Thesis) projects. An additional four new Fellows will arrive shortly.

See Advanced Joint Development Projects section 5.3

  6. Events:

Event preparation is being done by two Fellows for a 1996 workshop in Macau.

See Decision Support Systems for Environmentally Sustainable Development section 5.4.3.

  7. Consultancy:

This has involved work for UNDDSMS, [8], and consultancy for the Vietnam Ministry of Finance See Consultancy section 5.6.

  8. Off-shore UNU/IIST Laboratories:

UNU/IIST has started to establish off-shore `branches'. These are basically laboratories located at partners who otherwise have very constrained possibilities with respect to modern equipment and readily accessible literature.

See Off-shore UNU/IIST Software Technology Laboratories section 5.7

  9. Macau-oriented Actions:

In step with our expanded resources, financial and otherwise, we have increased our activities in Macau itself. An estimated 20% of our science manpower is devoted to Macau.

    See Macau section 6.

  10. Staff:

The Administrative and Programme Services Officer started on February 2, 1995.

The Principal Research Fellow has gone on an extended sabbatical. One new Research Fellow joined the first of the year; one PSA has been continued at the Senior Research Fellow level for two years as from 1.9.1995, and four new professional staff members have been hired after an extensive search (advertisement and evaluation).

One General Services staff member left end of August after 2+ years work and has been replaced.

For further details see Staff section 8.
