UNU/IIST is devoting a substantial proportion of its resources to lecturing, thesis supervision, joint university research, and proposing and discussing joint development project possibilities with Macau Government authorities.
Macau's involvement in high technology concepts is very new. This gives a special dimension to UNU/IIST's interaction with Macau institutions. It also means that UNU/IIST must spend extra resources on "nurturing the ground", supporting the maturation process, etc.
During the Autumn of 1994 and Winter and Spring of 1995, Prof. Wang Ju An of Macau University, together with Prof. Zhou Chaochen and others, researched, as part of the Hybrid Systems research programme, A Duration Calculus Approach to Specifying a Steam-boiler Control System. The resulting report was accepted for presentation at a by-invitation only workshop at the International Informatics Workshop Centre: Dagsthul, Saarland, Germany.
UNU/IIST was proud to fully fund Prof. Wang Ju An's three week visit to Denmark, Germany, France and England. See items 5.8, 5.8 and 5.8 section 5.8.
See items 5.1.3 and 5.1.3, section 5.1.3.
The current University of Macau students, enrolled in their Software Engineering Programme, are at the moment educated somewhat below comparable levels in China, Japan, Europe, and North America. This gives a special slant to our work with the young, eager and bright students of Macau.
UNU/IIST is currently reviewing whether to offer the 14 week M.Sc. courses in 1996, and if so, whether to change them radically.
Irrespective of the above, UNU/IIST will be offering the following two courses for all interested Macau professionals:
The course will be presented by UNU/IIST staff.
to be presented by Prof. Dr hab. Wladyslaw M. Turski, Institute of Informatics, Warsaw University, Poland.
See item 0 of section 5.10, and subsections LiMaCS 5.3.5, CaVIaR2 5.3.7 and GaD2IIS 5.3.8.
Currently UNU/IIST is supervising the M.Sc. Thesis work of:
His High Excellency the Governor of Macau, General Vasco Rocha Vieira, visited UNU/IIST on Friday July 21, in connection with the meeting of the Trustees of The Macau Foundation. HHE was accompanied at this function by His Excellency Dr. Jorge Rangel, Under-secretary for Administration, Education and Youth Affairs, the President and other Directors of the Macau Foundation: Dr. Antonio Rodrigues Jr., Dra. Beatriz da Silva and Mr. Wu Zhi Liang, as well as by most Trustees.
On that occasion, as was long expected, HHE The Governor expressed the desire that UNU/IIST embark on A #1 Priority for Macau: Joint Advanced Development Projects with the Macau Private Sector. UNU/IIST was well prepared for this. Over the period February 1993 to May 1995 UNU/IIST has issued, to the Macau Foundation as well as to other relevant Macau Government authorities, three detailed proposals relating to the CaVIaR2 concept. In a renewed response to HHE The Governor's widely publicized statements in connection with this visit, UNU/IIST sent to HHE The Governor, HE Dr. Rangel and to Dr. Rodrigues a detailed proposal for UNU/IIST's very close involvement with interested public and private sector institutions. The UNU/IIST proposal outlines suggestions for specific, detailed private and public sector software technology R&D and Training projects, modalities for their execution, etc.
UNU/IIST regularly approaches the Macau Government in order to ascertain its expectations.
The term premises refers to the UNU/IIST offices.
UNU/IIST is presently utilizing every available square metre of the current, temporary premises to the full. UNU/IISTis very grateful for these temporary premises but will shortly need more space. We have recently alerted the appropriate Macau authorities to our need for additional space by early 1996.
Three years have gone by since the Macau authorities first designated the site of the permanent premises, the Casa Silva Mendes. The very capable, and internationally recognized, architectural firm of Irene O' and Bruno A. Soares has completed all relevant architectural design proposals for the renovation and extension of the Casa Silva Mendes to become a suitable, long-term, permanent site of UNU/IIST. All that remains, after all local permits have been granted, is for the tender, contract award and renovation and extension to begin.
The weekly life of UNU/IIST typically includes one seminar: a standard Thursday morning colloquium. 40 such seminars have been held in 1995. 15 were presented by visitors.
The seminars are open to all and are widely publicized.
In addition to seminars, staff and Fellows often, typically weekly, present their ongoing work in a more informal colloquium style. Some 30 such colloquia have been held in 1995.
