In addition to training, the fellows produce scientific reports, often getting them published. If papers are accepted at international conferences, then UNU/IIST provides financial coverage for full participation in such events at which the Fellow presents the paper.

In addition to training, the fellows produce actual software and bring this software back to their seconding institution -- ostensibly for further development. Sometimes, and increasingly often, some fellows also produce technical reports for publication -- and get them published. (See previous footnote)
