6 Linkages with UNU, UN and other international organisations
- The UNU Financial Management System project has now reached the
actual system development stage and is being carried out by Tata
Consultancy Services for UNU. UNU/IIST has responsibility for the technical
supervision of this project.
- UNU/IIST is currently discussing with UNU/INRA in what way
UNU/IIST can assist INRA develop management information systems for
natural resources management in Africa.
- UNU/IIST has been contacted by UN/HQ through the UN
International Computing Centre in Geneva for assistance in
identifying potential interest, in Asia and world-wide, for a
strategic alliance with a major software company, or group of
companies, to further develop and possibly market the UN's
Integrated Management Information System (IMIS). Upon a request of
the IMIS Steering Committee UNU/IIST has also recommended an expert
from a developing country for the panel of experts which has been
commissioned by the General Assembly to undertake an evaluation of
the IMIS system.
- On the occasion of a mission to Beijing, Prof Zhou Chaochen and
Ms Margaret Stuart met with several UN agency representatives in
China to discuss possible cooperation in national activities. (UNDP,
UNIDO, and UNESCO). As a result of these initial contacts, the UNDP
Sustainable Development Networking Programme in China (SDNP/China)
is in addition considering possible areas of joint cooperation.
UNESCO Office in Beijing and
UNU/IIST are to organise a joint programme on computer science curriculum
development and education management software development for China,
Mongolia and DPR Korea with support from the Japanese Funds-In-Trust
for UNESCO/UNU cooperation. This activity will start with a
workshop, the purpose of which is to define the software
requirements for the education management system. This workshop
will be attended by senior education administrators and the fellows
who will work on the project.
- UNU/IIST has also been approached by UNESCO's Intergovernmental
Informatics Programme to organise training
courses on HTML and RAISE in the Central Asian Republics. (See
Section 3.2 on courses.)
- Macau has recently established a UNESCO Center with regard to
its observer status with UNESCO, and UNU/IIST is providing technical
assistance for the Center to establish its computing system. The Center
will also be involved in our joint activities with UNESCO HQ
and Beijing Office.
