9 Plans for 1999

In 1999, UNU/IIST will develop its activities based on the success of its current projects and programme.

  1. UNU/IIST will widen its technical scope. A new project on hardware/software co-design will be initiated by the research group and the advanced development group will continue to pursue the project on how to combine RAISE with Duration Calculus.

  2. The Curriculum Development Project will be further developed, becoming one of the major pivots of UNU/IIST's activities. UNU/IIST and UNESCO-Beijing have submitted a proposal to Japanese Funds-in-Trust which, if approved, would provide for some 6-8 Curriculum Development Fellowships in 1999.

  3. The University Development Project: The Curriculum Development Project will be complemented by this new activity which aims to strengthen computer science teaching in developing countries by providing fellowships to university lecturers to spend periods of 3-4 months at universities in industrialised countries. The project is still in the initial stages but several universities in industrialised countries (Australia, Canada, UK and USA) are keen to collaborate on a cost-sharing basis, but with UNU/IIST covering all direct fellowship costs. A full description of this project is given in Appendix C.

  4. Advanced courses: UNU/IIST will continue to expand its advanced training courses by offering courses in North Africa and also in Portuguese-speaking African countries. Also, in collaboration with UNESCO International Programme for Informatics, some training activities will be carried out in Central Asia (RAISE and HTML). UNU/IIST will also seek to develop courses in one or more new subject areas such as high performance programme design, mathematics for software engineering, design methodology, design of concurrent and distributed systems, and unified theory of programming.

  5. UNU/IIST will continue to develop its relations with Macau and China in view of the hand-over of Macau in 1999.

  6. UNU/IIST will strengthen its linkages with UNU and other UN organisations according to the strategic plan of UNU.
