6 Linkages with UNU, UN and other International Organisations

  1. During 22-24 April 1999, UNU/IIST hosted the 17th Session of the Conference of Directors (CONDIR) meeting of UNU at UNU/IIST.

  2. The new UNU Financial, Budgetary, and Personnel Management System (FBPMS), for which UNU/IIST had acted as a consultant, was installed and tested by UNU/IIST and Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) technical staff from 6 November to 3 December 1999. Two UNU/IIST administrative staff members underwent training on the new system at UNU/HQ from 15 November to 20 November 1999. FBPMS went into official operation on 1 January 2000.

  3. During 15-24 March and 3-14 May 1999, Mr. Fu Guoyi and Dr. Richard Moore delivered training courses in Baku, Azerbaijan, under a joint effort with UNESCO HQ and the Macau UNESCO Center. Between 5-19 September 1999, Mr. Fu Guoyi presented a course on Creating Home Pages at the Nakhichevan Computer Centre of Informatics Scientific and Production Incorporation in Azerbaijan. The course costs and all of Mr. Fu Guoyi's expenses were covered by UNESCO HQ. During a mission to UNESCO HQ on 20 September 1999, Prof. Zhou Chaochen discussed future joint cooperation in coordinating computer science courses in Tajikistan.

  4. A joint project on Educational Software and Computer Science Curriculum Development with the UNESCO Beijing Office and the Macau UNESCO Center has progressed. The Japanese funds-in-trust for UNESCO/UNU provided the project with US$25,000 and UNU/IIST contributed US$10,000. Mr. Noguchi of UNESCO Beijing Office visited Macau in May to finalise the project agreement. The Macau UNESCO Center has agreed to contribute US$5,000 to this project. An agreement between the three parties was signed on 26 May 1999 in Macau. The first 2 project Fellows arrived at UNU/IIST on 28 May 1999 followed by 4 others on 1 November 1999.

  5. During Prof. Zhou Chaochen's mission to the International Computing Center (ICC) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) on 17 September 1999, both sides expressed their keen interest in collaborating on future activities.

  6. In November 1999, Prof. Zhou Chaochen visited New York and Washington. He visited

    1. Vietnam Ambassador, China Counsellor and Ambassador, Portugal Ambassador, and Mozambique Ambassador to brief them about UNU/IIST and to seek their support for the UNU/IIST activities; and

    2. the Together Foundation, the Information Technology Services Division of UN and InfoDev, World Bank, to discuss possible cooperation in future.
