7.2 Premises

7.2.1 Office Premises

In March 1999, the extensive renovations to Casa Silva Mendes were completed and UNU/IIST began to occupy its new office premises on 27 March 1999. The inauguration ceremony, led by the Governor of Macau, General Vasco Rocha Vieira, took place on 25 May 1999. This beautifully renovated historic building offers a most pleasant working and learning environment.

UNU/IIST is very grateful to the Macau Government and the Macau Foundation for their generous support in renovating and furnishing Casa Silva Mendes.

7.2.2 Fellows' Apartments

In December 1999, the Macau Government provided UNU/IIST with 12 newly renovated fellows' apartments that will serve as permanent lodgings for UNU/IIST fellows. The Macau Foundation in cooperation with the Finance Department of the Macau Government have identified 6 additional apartments that are currently under renovation. Once completed, these 18 single occupancy apartments will meet UNU/IIST's minimum accommodation requirements.

The Macau Foundation is also committed to providing one permanent guest apartment which has yet to be identified. This guest apartment will be able to accommodate visiting lecturers and their families.

While the 6 additional fellows' apartments undergo renovation and the search continues for a suitable guest apartment, the Macau Foundation continues to lease housing for UNU/IIST.

7.3 Finance

7.3.1 Endowment Fund

UNU has met with officials of UNU/IIST's three donor countries to seek their approval to waive investment restrictions. This will allow for contributions from the three donors (Macau, Portugal and China) to be invested more productively.
