9 Plans for 2000

In 2000 UNU/IIST will further develop its international research identity and consolidate its postgraduate training in software technology at an advanced level. UNU/IIST will continue to focus on Formal Methods, specifically on RAISE and Duration Calculus, and at the same time will further widen its technical scope.

  1. While UNU/IIST continues to focus on RAISE and Duration Calculus, it will, based on available resources, provide developing countries with awareness courses, tool sets, literature compendia, etc., for other Formal Methods.

  2. UNU/IIST is planning to offer a course on Project and Quality Management starting in 2000. This is a natural extension of its focus on Formal Methods, and can meet a definite perceived need.

  3. The University Development Project will play an important role in UNU/IIST's agenda in 2000. With assistance from developed countries, this project can widen our service for developing countries, in particular for countries in which the university computing curriculum is currently deficient. In 2000, UNU/IIST intends to propose a recommendation on how to develop university curricula in computing science in developing countries.

UNU/IIST, with support from Utrecht University, has trained UNU/IIST Fellows in the Netherlands to conduct research on Telecommunication Systems. In 2000, UNU/IIST plans to seek more support from its partner institutions in developed countries to train its off-shore Fellows in conducting research.

In 2000 UNU/IIST will further expand its activities in Latin America and Africa, according to a needs assessment and available UNU/IIST resources. UNU/IIST intends to initiate its training activities in the Caribbean region and Central America. UNU/IIST plans to recruit African Fellows for the University Development Project, and to approach the partners in South Africa for organising joint training programme for its neighbour countries.

In order to meet more demand from developing countries, UNU/IIST will make more effort to seek project contribution from various sources.

UNU/IIST will continue to strengthen relations with the host government. In 2000 UNU/IIST will make extra efforts to establish excellent diplomatic and working relations with the new government authority: the government of the Macau Special Administrative Region of China.
