7.2 Premises

7.2.1 Office premises

Since UNU/IIST began to occupy its new office premises on 27 March 1999, renovation and reconstruction work has been ongoing to correct numerous construction faults. As of 4 October 2000, all major faults have been corrected. Aside from the few remaining minor faults, Casa Silva Mendes is a beautiful historic building and a very inviting place to work and learn.

A variety of new furnishings have been generously provided by the Macau Foundation to enhance UNU/IIST's office environment and increase its capacity to host international meetings and conferences.

UNU/IIST is very grateful to the Macau Government and the Macau Foundation for their generous support in paying for recent renovations and providing additional office furnishings.

7.2.2 Fellows' apartments

During the first quarter of 2000, the Macau Government provided UNU/IIST with 6 additional apartments for a total of 18 single occupancy apartments. At present, UNU/IIST has a sufficient number of apartments to meet its accommodation requirements.

UNU/IIST has purchased new household items for each apartment ranging from major appliances to cookware. The total value of these assets is US $ 14,000.

In order to preserve and maintain the condition of these newly renovated apartments, UNU/IIST provides fellows with a comprehensive cleaning supplies package. Because of high fellow turnover, all apartments are also cleaned for 2 hours each week by commercial cleaners to ensure that major appliances, furnishings, walls and floors are well maintained.

The Macau Foundation also provides UNU/IIST with one guest apartment. This apartment is used to accommodate visiting lecturers and their families.

7.3 Finance

7.3.1 Endowment fund

Since 1998 investment restrictions have been lifted to allow for the voluntary contributions received from China, Macau and Portugal to be invested in global markets. The total net contribution from these three donor countries amounts to US$ 30,000,000.
