II/1/1 Research Projects
UNU/IIST's research projects have the overall aim of assisting the developing countries in meeting
needs and strengthen capabilities in software technology research.
By research projects, with assistance from industrial world
UNU/IIST can mobilise its fellows, visitors and staff
- to improve existing software techniques in
order to satisfy demands for UNU/IIST advanced development projects;
- to establish its research identity in
the international software community;
- to train themselves in doing advanced research with
international standards;
- to assist universities in developing countries to promote
their educational degree programme; and
- to practice research management with project leaders from
developing countries.
The selection and evaluation of research projects are based on the
following principles:
- As UNU/IIST emphasises software developments using design calculi,
UNU/IIST will select their research topics in this direction.
- As development projects will become the major activity of UNU/IIST,
UNU/IIST prioritises research projects relevant to its
development projects.
- UNU/IIST emphasises jointness of its research projects. Projects can
be joint with partners in developing countries, and yet in industrial
countries.
- the UNU/IIST academic criterion for evaluating research projects
conforms to international standards.
UNU/IIST requires its research projects to improve state-of-the-art of
software technology, and invites international reviewers to assess
its research.
- UNU/IIST is also concerned with social benefit of its research
projects by
- enhancing international cooperation;
- training young researchers/teachers;
- promoting university degree programme; and
- demonstrating project management.
- UNU/IIST will engage such researchers which otherwise adheres to UNU/IIST's design calculi dogma, but will -- as is standard academic practice -- respect their staff's future research interests.
The current research projects are II/1/1/3, II/1/1/4,
II/1/1/5, II/1/1/6, II/1/1/7 and II/1/1/8.
