There is a considerable quantity of software available on the internet that is free and also of high quality. In particular amongst software that UNU/IIST itself uses there is:

• Linux, a Unix replacement that will run on PCs and other platforms.

• Software produced by GNU, including the gcc compiler for C/C++, f77 compiler for Fortran, and a large range of utilities, in particular:

• emacs, an editor with a host of features that is also easily extensible.

• LaTeX for producing high quality documentation. (MikTeX is a good version of LaTeX for Windows).

• The RAISE tools (see section III/3/1) being produced by UNU/IIST.

If you have a reasonable internet connection all this and much more is freely and conveniently available. But many institutions in developing countries have limited and/or expensive internet connections.

This is where UNU/IIST can help. We will provide free to academic institutions in developing countries copies on CDROM of software that is freely available on the internet from reputable sources.

Tell us precisely what you want in terms of URLs if you can, otherwise tell us what software you want, for what hardware and using what operating system. And remember to tell us where to send it!

UNU/IIST has limited resources. We will have to withdraw this service if it is overwhelmed by requests. Please only use it if you have no reasonable alternative.
