A full description of UNU/IIST's research projects can be found in Reference Handbook section II/1/1.
Topics for research projects are mutually agreed between UNU/IIST and either the individual Fellow or the Fellow's home research institute, but must fit largely within the areas of expertise of UNU/IIST's current staff and/or visiting scientists.
Fellows are usually identified from among the attendees at UNU/IIST's training courses or by direct recommendation by colleagues of UNU/IIST. Normally, research project fellowships last between six months and one year, with each Fellow working individually with his or her Tutor. See Reference Handbook section IV/2 for full details of UNU/IIST fellowships.
UNU/IIST hopes that research project Fellows will continue the work they begin at UNU/IIST when they return to their home institutions and expects the home institutions to support such continuation. UNU/IIST also asks the partner institutions to cover local expenses for UNU/IIST staff and local nationals who attend meetings at the partner institution which relate to the joint research project.
