UNU-IIST welcomes applications from academic staff whose research interests fit in closely with UNU-IIST's work to spend a period of time working at UNU-IIST while on sabbatical leave from their own university, which may be in either a developing or an industrialised country. Those accepted are expected to work closely with UNU-IIST staff and fellows on one or more of UNU-IIST's current research projects.

Details of the work to be done and the terms and conditions pertaining to the stay at UNU-IIST are negotiated on a case by case basis, though applicants are urged to submit an outline proposal for the former with their application.
