Introduction

Institute of Problems of Informatics and Control MES RK (IPIC) jointly with International Institute for Software Technology of United Nations University (UNU/IIST) hold Second International Summer School “Formal Methods and Information Technologies” on August 2 – August 14, 2004. The first school was held on August 1 – August 15, 2002.
It is supposed that participants of the school will be professors of universities, post graduates and staff of interested Central Asia  and Russia institutes.
Currently, there are thousands of students studying IT in many universities and colleges in Central Asia region. Every year, this number increases significantly in order to satisfy the urgent need for qualified personnel in IT markets. However, due to difficulties similar to those of other developing countries, Central Asia states have problems with the quality of IT training. Some advanced IT topics are not given enough attention. Most universities in Central Asia states are short of qualified lecturers. In this context, a summer IT school with the support of UNU/IIST would be a great help to universities and companies to solve this problem.

 

Aims of the school

Aim of the school is to inform audience with modern information technologies by both lectures and practical classes.

The goal of the school is to provide lecturers, researchers, developers, and managers from Central Asia region with state-of-the-art software development techniques together with necessary foundations for the development of their professional career. The school will also give participants a chance to exchange experience, ideas, and solutions for their problems, and to exchange university curriculum with teachers and colleagues from different places in the country and from abroad. It will also help to initiate new topics for research and to encourage people in doing research as well as developments.

 

Planed Courses and Program

Based on the common needs of institutions in Central Asia region, the following courses are planned for the school together with the lecturers:

  1. Introduction to formal development using RAISE and some example applications. (Mr. Chris George, UNU/IIST)

  2. Software development using UML (Dr. Saule Sagnaeva, IPIC – Aulie-Ata University)

  3. Introduction to specification languages Duration Calculus and CSP (Prof. Bektur Baizhanov and Dr. Viktor Verbovskiy, IPIC)

  4. Specifying Systems in TLA+ (Stephan Merz, Lorraine branch of INRIA)

Time: Two weeks from August 2 till August 14, 2002, from 9:00am till 1:00pm and from 2:00pm till 6:00pm.
Program: The program for the school is still under schedule.
 

Participants

The participants for the school are required to have good background in Computer Science. The number of the participants is estimated around 30 from all over the countries — Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Russia, included the participants from Almaty, Karaganda, Taraz, Ust-Kamenogorsk, Bishkek, Barnaul, Novosibirsk, Dushanbe, Khujand, Ashgabat, Tashkent. Most of the participants will be IT lecturers, developers, researchers.
