Introduction

The Department of Computer Science of Zhengzhou University jointly with the International Institute for Software Technology of United Nations University (UNU/IIST) will hold a Summer School “Methods and Tools for High Quality Software Development” during August 16 – August 27, 2004. It is supposed that participants of the school will be professors and lecturers of universities, post graduates and staff of interested institutes in China. Information and Communication Technology can play an important role in the economic growth of China. Software and Knowledge-Intensive Industries are the major providers of such technologies.

A serious problem plaguing Software Industries is poor development practices. The problem is the major course of delays in software projects, overspending of budgets, and chronic problems with dependability (safety, reliability and security) and maintainability of software products. To deal with these problems, software development needs to rely on modern engineering processes to develop high-quality, globally competitive products. Such processes require a variety of methods, tools and techniques based on solid mathematical foundations. This school has been designed to provide the participants with a selected set of such methods and tools.

Aims of the school

The aim of the school is to inform audience on modern software technologies by both lectures and practical classes.

The goal of the school is to provide lecturers, researchers, developers, and managers from China with state-of-the-art software development techniques together with necessary foundations for the development of their professional career. The school will also give participants a chance to exchange experience, ideas, and solutions for their problems, and to exchange university curriculum with teachers and colleagues from different places in the country and from abroad. It will also help to initiate new topics for research and to encourage people in doing research as well as developments.

Planned Courses and Program

Based on the common interests and needs of institutions in
China, the following courses are planned for the school together with the lecturers:

1.      High-Integrity Software Development in SPARK (Dr. Kung-Kiu Lau, Department of Computer Science, University of Machester, U.K.)
From August 16 till August 18, 2004 (2.5 days)

2.      Protocol Verification using Process Algebra (Prof. Wan Fokkink, Department of Software Engineering, CWI, The Netherland)
From August 18 till August 20, 2004 (2.5 days)

3.      Using Timed Automata to Specify and Verify Real-Time Systems (Dr. Jozef Hooman, Embedded Systems Institute Einhoven & University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands)
